In response to recent immigration interventions, the asylum backlog, and streamlined asylum processes, Action Foundation embarked on a proactive journey to fortify its casework capabilities. The Organisation recognized the need to safeguard staff members, enhance their skills, and bolster their emotional resilience to address the ever-evolving demands of their clients.
Action Foundation made the conscious decision to prioritise the protection of staff time for professional development. This involved equipping staff members with the knowledge necessary to navigate the complexities of immigration changes, especially in relation to the asylum backlog and streamlined asylum questionnaires. Alongside this, Action Foundation focused on enhancing the emotional intelligence, technical expertise, and ethical standards of their caseworkers and volunteers through targeted training programs. Recognizing the taxing nature of client demands, particularly those concerning housing and basic needs, the Organisation introduced initiatives to ensure staff well- being. Clinical supervision sessions and stress management workshops became essential components of supporting staff members in coping with the challenges they faced.
To streamline their casework provision, Action Foundation underwent a thorough review of existing procedures, aiming to standardise them to a higher level of efficiency. Simultaneously, the Organisation introduced a new casework framework. This framework was designed to assess caseworkers for any skills gaps right from the beginning of their engagement. Furthermore, Action Foundation established a clear pathway for triage volunteers to progress into caseworker roles, promoting internal growth and ensuring that individuals stepping into these roles were well-prepared. To track and enhance caseworker knowledge acquisition, a structured caseworker portfolio was introduced. This portfolio went beyond mere technical expertise; it Emphasised the development of appropriate behaviours, especially crucial when dealing with clients in challenging or vulnerable situations.
Recognizing the importance of maintaining a social connection, Action Foundation integrated this aspect into their Drop-In services. Here, clients could not only seek assistance but also share a meal, fostering a sense of community. Casework provision seamlessly intertwined with these communal meals, creating a holistic and supportive environment for clients. This integrated approach was instrumental in reducing the overall stress associated with seeking assistance. Additionally, it ensured that staff members had the opportunity to take a break for their own well-being.
